Obscured Releasing acquires controversial drama 'Blue Film'

Obscured Releasing has acquired the rights to 'Blue Film,' a sexually charged drama about a camboy and an anonymous client with a disturbing past connection. The film, which faced rejections from major festivals due to its controversial content, will hit theaters in May. Directed by Elliot Tuttle, it stars Kieron Moore and Reed Birney.

'Blue Film' explores the night a fetish camboy named Aaron Eagle spends with an older anonymous client, uncovering a shocking tie to his past. Written and directed by Elliot Tuttle, the film received strong reviews but was deemed too controversial for inclusion at festivals like Sundance and SXSW. It had its world premiere at the 2025 Edinburgh International Film Festival and made its North American debut at Newfest in the fall.

The movie later screened at the OUTShine Film Festival, Philadelphia International Film Festival, and Montclair Film Festival, among others. Obscured Releasing, a new distribution company founded by indie publicist RJ Millard and former Gravitas executive Bill Guentzler, picked up the film for a theatrical release this May.

Kieron Moore stars as Aaron Eagle, with Reed Birney, known from 'The Menu,' playing the client. Production credits include producers Bijan Kazerooni, Will Youmans, Adam Kersh, and Waylon Sall, with Mark Duplass as consulting producer and Birney and Eric Kohn as executive producers.

Tuttle expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “I’m thrilled to be partnering with Obscured Releasing on our theatrical rollout of ‘Blue Film.’ Their passion and commitment to a long life for our film made this an easy choice. A lot of people were scared, but Obscured wasn’t.”

Millard and Guentzler praised the film's boldness in a joint statement: “What Elliot accomplishes in telling the story of how two men’s sexuality and their connection shaped their futures is simultaneously humane and shocking. He is asking questions no American filmmaker has dared to ask in decades and we’re thrilled to be launching ‘Blue Film’ in theaters.”

The acquisition deal was negotiated by Matt Burke of Submarine Entertainment for the filmmakers and O’Brien Kelley of The Kelley Firm for Obscured Releasing.
