Olympic horse Pluto Mio dies aged 28

Stuart Tinney has announced the passing of Pluto Mio, the horse that helped Australia secure team bronze at the Rio Olympics. The 28-year-old gelding died in retirement.

Pluto Mio was owned and bred by Jane and John Pittard. Tinney took over the ride in 2010 after the horse began his international career with Katja Weimann in 2008.

Tinney described the gelding’s temperament as feisty yet endearing. He noted that Pluto Mio was bold across country and sensitive to noise, yet gave 100 percent in competition.

The pair finished 10th at the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy. At the Rio Olympics they jumped clear across country, securing bronze for Australia just 6.3 penalties behind the winning French team.

Pluto Mio spent his retirement at Tinney’s property one hour from Sydney alongside the Sydney Olympics gold medallist Jeepster. Tinney said the horse would always hold a special place in his heart and those of his family.
