Police dogs in region mitt get improved working conditions

Police dogs in region mitt are moving to the back seat in rebuilt vehicles to reduce stress and improve contact with their handlers. Deliveries of the new cars began in early 2026.

Police in region mitt have rebuilt the dog cars so the animals sit in the back seat instead of a cage on the flatbed. This gives the dogs constant contact with the handler and a better view of their surroundings.

The change follows reports that many dogs suffered from noise and isolation in the earlier pickup trucks introduced in 2019. Handler Gustav Klahr says his three-year-old malinois Drago is now calmer and more focused.

The rebuilt cars have now been delivered to units in Gävleborgs, Uppsala and Västmanlands counties. Klahr notes he can take the dog directly out of the vehicle during call-outs.
