Region Uppsala buys 20 trams for three billion kronor

Region Uppsala has signed an agreement to buy 20 trams for three billion kronor from Skoda Transtech Oy, even though a planned bridge over Fyrisån is still under court review.

Region Uppsala and AB Transitio have awarded the Finnish company Skoda Transtech Oy the contract to supply the vehicles. Transitio owns the trams and leases them to the region.

The contract value is three billion kronor. Each tram is estimated to cost about 66.6 million kronor and has a technical lifespan of at least 30 years.

Project manager Erik Winge says things are now happening for real. Traffic director Karin Svingby states that agreements have also been signed for a depot and the track facility.

A court process regarding the bridge over Fyrisån is ongoing at the Land and Environment Court of Appeal. The Swedish Transport Administration has moved the deadline for the tramway to 2032.

Centerpartiet has partially reversed its opposition to Uppsala's tram project, now favoring construction of half the route rather than canceling it entirely. The decision stems from estimated cancellation costs of 3.8 to 4.2 billion kronor. Oppositionsråd Ehsan Nasari (C) stated that scrapping the whole project is no longer economically defensible.
