Police warn about scam emails alleging serious crimes

Police in Bergslagen warn of a wave of scam emails claiming the recipient is suspected of serious sexual crimes against children.

Police in the Bergslagen police region have received calls in recent days from people who got emails where the sender claims to be from the police. The email accuses the recipient of downloading or viewing illegal images and videos of minors and states that legal measures have been taken.

The email is signed by the national police chief and claims the recipient has 72 hours to respond or the accusations are accepted and the person is registered as a sex offender. Police urge recipients not to reply to the email.

The authority advises against clicking links, being suspicious of requests for personal details, and using unique passwords for key services.
