Rivian has revealed details of its upcoming R2 mid-size electric SUV, positioning it as a more affordable alternative to its R1 models and a competitor to the Tesla Model Y. The vehicle will launch with higher trims this year, while the entry-level Standard model arrives in late 2027 starting at $45,000. Key features include varying power outputs and ranges up to 345 miles.
Rivian unveiled specifications for the R2 on March 12, 2026, targeting the competitive mid-size electric SUV market dominated by the Tesla Model Y. The R2 is built on a new mid-size platform, measuring 185.9 inches long, 84.7 inches wide, and 66.9 inches tall, with a 115.6-inch wheelbase. It offers greater cargo capacity at 90.1 cubic feet compared to the Model Y's 75.5 cubic feet.
The lineup includes three main trims. The base R2 Standard is rear-wheel drive with a single motor producing 350 horsepower and 355 pound-feet of torque, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. It estimates over 275 miles of EPA range, though Rivian has not disclosed the battery size; a Long Range version extends this to 345 miles for $48,490. Higher trims use an 87.9-kilowatt-hour battery. The R2 Premium all-wheel drive variant delivers 450 horsepower and 537 pound-feet, with 330 miles of range, priced at $53,990 and slated for late 2026. The top R2 Performance all-wheel drive offers 656 horsepower and 609 pound-feet, reaching 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, also with 330 miles of range, starting at $57,990 with the Launch Package.
Charging from 10% to 80% takes 29 minutes on a compatible DC fast charger, using a 400-volt architecture and native NACS port for Tesla Supercharger access. The R2 excels in off-road capability with 9.6 inches of ground clearance, a 25-degree approach angle, and a 26-degree departure angle—superior to the Model Y's estimated 18- and 17-degree angles. Towing capacity reaches 4,400 pounds with an optional package, exceeding the Model Y's 3,500 pounds.
Standard features on the base model include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, 19-inch wheels, and a five-speaker audio system. Options like Autonomy+ hands-free driving cost $50 per month or $2,500 one-time. Rivian chief engineer Max Koff stated, "With R2, our goal wasn't just to build a more affordable Rivian, it was to build a more accessible one that still delivers on the core performance our community expects."
The R2 Performance launches first in spring 2026, followed by the Premium later that year, and the Standard in late 2027. While the base R2 matches the Model Y's $45,000 price, its range falls short at 275 miles versus the Model Y's 357 miles.
