SJ has paid nearly ten million kronor in fines for night train deficiencies to Jämtland

SJ has paid a total of 9.6 million kronor in fines over the past five years for issues with night train services to Jämtland county.

The latest fine of 1.3 million kronor was imposed for shortcomings during the first quarter of this year. It covered 219 broken toilets and showers along with issues in ventilation and temperature systems. It also included 44 delayed departures and arrivals.

SJ has operated night trains between Stockholm and Jämtland on behalf of Trafikverket since 2018. Fines have been issued every quarter from 2021 to 2025 with one exception. The deficiencies have primarily involved hundreds of non-functioning toilets and showers.

Business manager Jan Kyrk at SJ says that showers and toilets on trains face stresses different from a home environment. The company is now upgrading the night trains for 380 million kronor.
