SK and Nvidia chiefs discuss AI ties in Silicon Valley: sources

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won met Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang at a Korean fried chicken restaurant in Silicon Valley last week to discuss AI industry cooperation. Chey's eldest daughter, Chey Yoon-chung, vice president of SK Biopharmaceuticals, also attended the meeting. The venue echoed Huang's October gathering in Seoul with other South Korean business leaders.

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won met Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang for about two hours on Thursday (U.S. time), February 5, at a Korean fried chicken restaurant in Silicon Valley, California. According to industry sources, Chey's eldest daughter, Chey Yoon-chung, vice president of SK Biopharmaceuticals Co., also attended, and the leaders discussed possible cooperation in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, encompassing chips and biotechnology sectors.

Sources indicated that the two are widely believed to have talked about supply plans for HBM4, the next generation of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) expected to be used in Nvidia's upcoming AI accelerator, dubbed Vera Rubin. They may have also explored ways to cooperate on developing the AI ecosystem in South Korea.

The venue, a Korean-style restaurant, mirrors Huang's October meeting over beer with Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung and Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong at a fried chicken restaurant in southern Seoul. Chey has been in the U.S. since earlier this month for meetings with officials from big tech companies, the sources added. This encounter highlights SK Group's interest in expanding AI ties.
