Steve Yzerman removed as Detroit Red Wings general manager

Detroit Red Wings announced Wednesday that Steve Yzerman will no longer serve as general manager and vice president of hockey operations. He will remain with the organization in a new role as senior adviser.

The team said the move follows several seasons without a return to the playoffs. Owner and chief executive Chris Ilitch stated that the organization is not where it or the fans expect it to be.

Ilitch added that he looks forward to bringing in new leadership to build a championship-caliber organization for Hockeytown.

Yzerman returned to Detroit as general manager in 2019 after holding the same position with the Tampa Bay Lightning. As a player he served as captain during the club's Stanley Cup wins in 1997, 1998 and 2002.

Detroit has now begun its search for a new person to lead hockey operations.
