The Housemaid surpasses $300 million at global box office

The psychological thriller The Housemaid has crossed the $300 million mark worldwide, becoming Sydney Sweeney's highest-grossing starring film. The mid-budget Lionsgate production, directed by Paul Feig, has earned $116 million domestically and $189.1 million internationally. Its success follows positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth after a modest Christmas opening.

The Housemaid, an R-rated psychological thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, has achieved a significant box office milestone by surpassing $300 million globally, reaching a total of $305 million. Produced by Lionsgate for just $35 million, the film is poised to be highly profitable for the studio.

Directed by Paul Feig and adapted from Freida McFadden’s best-selling novel, the story centers on a young woman with a mysterious past, played by Sweeney, who becomes the live-in maid for a wealthy family portrayed by Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. Their seemingly perfect life unravels in twisted fashion. The film opened ahead of Christmas with $19 million in North America and sustained momentum into the new year, driven by favorable reviews and audience recommendations.

Internationally, it has performed exceptionally, earning $189.1 million. Last weekend, it topped charts in territories like the United Kingdom, France, Mexico, Brazil, and Spain, despite debuting nearly a month earlier in those markets. Leading international earners include the United Kingdom at $36.4 million, France at $33.4 million, Latin America at $26.2 million, Australia and New Zealand at $15.3 million, and Spain at $12.5 million.

This marks Sweeney's top-grossing film as a lead, overtaking 2023's Anyone but You, which earned $220.2 million. Her brief role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood grossed $392 million but does not count as a starring vehicle. The release follows the poor performance of November's Christy, a biographical drama where Sweeney played boxer Christy Martin, which opened to $1.3 million and totaled $1.9 million.

For Feig, The Housemaid exceeds his 2011 comedy Bridesmaids at $289.3 million. Producer Todd Lieberman’s fourth film to top $300 million, after 2017’s Beauty and the Beast remake, 2009’s The Proposal, and 2017’s Wonder. Given the novel's sequels, The Housemaid’s Secret is in development, with Sweeney, Feig, and Michele Morrone expected to return.
