Twin proboscis monkey babies born on Curiak Island

A pair of twin proboscis monkey babies was born at the Camp Tim Roberts Proboscis Monkey Research Station on Curiak Island, South Kalimantan, in mid-June 2026.

The births came from the Alpha group in an area managed by Dr. Amalia Rezeki of Universitas Lambung Mangkurat together with Sahabat Bekantan Indonesia. Amalia said the event is very rare because proboscis monkeys typically give birth to one infant per season after a five- to six-month gestation.

Amalia expressed gratitude and emotion after more than ten years dedicated to proboscis monkey conservation on Curiak Island. She noted that three proboscis monkey babies have been born in the area so far this year.

The proboscis monkey, or Nasalis larvatus, is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. The twin births have drawn attention from academics and conservationists.
