Ubisoft and Disgaea creators react to Sony's physical media plans

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said Sony's planned move away from physical discs will not disturb the industry much. Disgaea creator Sohei Niikawa offered a stronger view during an interview at Anime Expo 2026.

Guillemot spoke during a Ubisoft financial call on July 24. He said the shift could make hardware more accessible, drawing from the PC market's growth with digital sales. "What we saw on the PC is that it helped to grow the market," he stated.

Niikawa spoke to Noisy Pixel at the same event. He acknowledged the business case but added that if Sony eliminates physical packages, it may as well eliminate the hardware too. "A television would be enough," he said.

Sony announced its intent on July 1. Both comments came amid ongoing industry discussion about the change.
