Umeå resident charged with customs offense after Qatar purchase

A man from Umeå has been charged with a customs offense after carrying clothes worth 28,850 kronor from a layover in Qatar. Customs at Arlanda Airport found the items exceeded the duty-free limit.

The man stated that he bought the sweater, shoes and belt ahead of a wedding. Receipts showed the purchases were made during a flight with a layover in Qatar. The limit for duty-free clothing purchases is 5,000 kronor. The man said he was unaware of the rules. A trial will be held at Umeå District Court. The prosecutor has proposed 70 day fines totaling 9,800 kronor as punishment. The man also paid nearly 10,000 kronor in customs duties to retrieve the clothes from the airport.
