Walton Goggins suggested the line that became the closing moment of FX's Justified. Showrunner Graham Yost credited Goggins with the idea during the Season 6 finale.
In the series finale, Boyd Crowder tells Raylan Givens, "We dug coal together." Raylan nods and replies, "That's right." Yost told the Television Academy that the exchange was not planned in advance.
Goggins proposed the line after discussing the characters' shared history. Yost then worked with writer Fred Golan to decide on Raylan's response, settling on both the nod and the reply.
The actors had faced tensions while filming the later seasons. Goggins said they were deeply immersed in their opposing roles and needed time apart. Olyphant noted that creative disagreements arose once he became a producer on the series.
