Clark acknowledged the hostility after his victory. “Man, they definitely didn’t want me to win,” he said. He noted the rarity of such open disapproval in a major championship.
Scheffler, who competed for a career Grand Slam on his 30th birthday, described the atmosphere. “The crowd was tough today,” he said. “I mean, New Yorkers, they are tough people.” Scheffler added that Clark handled both the course and the spectators effectively.
