The talks took place at the Great Hall of the People, with Trump on a three-day state visit to China, the first such visit in nine years. Xi described the relationship as one of positive stability with cooperation as the mainstay, moderate competition, manageable differences and enduring promises of peace. Trump said he would work with Xi to strengthen communication and cooperation and make bilateral relations better than ever.

The leaders discussed economic cooperation, trade, fentanyl, Taiwan, Iran, Ukraine and North Korea. Xi stressed that Taiwan was the most important issue and warned of clashes if mishandled. Trump invited Xi and first lady Peng Liyuan to visit the White House on September 24.

Xi hosted a welcome ceremony for Trump featuring a military band and 21-gun salute. The two later visited the Temple of Heaven. Trump called it a fantastic day and praised Xi as a great leader.
