Deputy U.S. Marshal shot dead serving warrant in Louisiana

A deputy U.S. Marshal was shot and killed Monday while serving an arrest warrant on a fugitive in Alexandria, Louisiana. The suspect was injured during a three-hour standoff but is now in custody and receiving hospital treatment.

The shooting took place around 3 p.m. Monday as marshals worked with detectives from the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office. After a lengthy standoff the suspect was taken into custody.

The FBI is leading a joint investigation with the sheriff's office and Louisiana State Police. The bureau has described the incident as an assault on a federal officer.

FBI Director Kash Patel said late Monday that the bureau is offering full resources to the agencies involved. He asked the public to pray for the deputy's family and friends.

Neighbors near the scene told local reporters they were surprised by the events. Several described the suspect as a good man who was always in good spirits.
