Emir Sanusi performs mini durbar for EU ambassador

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, staged a mini durbar at his palace on 8 June 2026 to honour the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, and his delegation.

The event revived traditional Hausa customs with displays of horse riders in regalia. It formed part of the ambassador’s visit to Kano Emirate. Emir Sanusi urged the European Union to increase support for security, healthcare and education in Kano State and Nigeria, with special focus on girls’ schooling. He recalled Kano’s historic role in trans-Saharan trade and noted the 2024 UNESCO inscription of the Kano Durbar as intangible cultural heritage. Ambassador Mignot said the delegation aimed to strengthen cooperation with northern Nigeria. He praised the cultural heritage and thanked the hosts for their reception. Palace officials and community leaders attended the proceedings.
