Irish rap trio Kneecap have unveiled their new single 'Smugglers & Scholars', the second track from their forthcoming album 'FENIAN', set for release on April 24. The song premiered on Zane Lowe's Apple Music 1 show and draws on Ireland's revolutionary history with influences from Detroit hip-hop. The group describes it as a hopeful reflection on times when working-class people, academics, and others united for a better future.

Kneecap, the Irish hip-hop group consisting of Mo Chara (Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh), Naoise Ó Cairealláin, and JJ Ó Dochartaigh, shared 'Smugglers & Scholars' on February 24, 2026. The track, named as a play on the epithet 'Land of Saints and Scholars' for Ireland, features sirens and a thick bass riff, creating an intense sound. Lyrics include: "Ya think it’s all poetry and clovers, when it’s raincoats and police Land Rovers / Salt of the earth, looking over their shoulder, someone shot in turn, chopper hovering over."

In a statement, Kneecap explained: "a track that’s reminiscing on revolutionary times in Ireland, driven by a hopefulness, when the working class, academics and good people everywhere united and took action in search of a better future." The single follows 'Liars Tale', released on January 28, 2026, as the lead from 'FENIAN', their third album after 2024's 'Fine Art'. Produced by Dan Carey, 'FENIAN' arrives via Heavenly Recordings and includes 14 tracks with collaborations from Kae Tempest, Radie Peat, and Fawzi. The band noted in announcing the album: "It’s a more sinister sound…because these are sinister times. But also defiant and triumphant." They drew inspiration from 'Fenian', a term for Irish warriors and later a derogatory label, now reclaimed for those speaking truth to power.

The album reflects a tumultuous period, including Mo Chara's terror case. Stemming from an alleged November 2024 incident at a London gig where he reportedly displayed a Hezbollah flag and shouted "up Hamas, up Hezbollah"—both proscribed by the UK—the charge was dropped in September 2025 due to a technicality, deemed "unlawful" and "null" by the Chief Magistrate. An appeal is ongoing. Speaking to Zane Lowe, Mo Chara described 'FENIAN' as "a more mature album with a bit more to say," looking back on a "crazy year." He added that making music was "therapeutic," helping process hectic experiences.

Kneecap have upcoming shows, including UK out-stores in late April, European festivals like Primavera Sound and Roskilde, and a headline at London's Crystal Palace Park on June 27.
