Lightspeed LA lays off 80 staff from Last Sentinel

Lightspeed LA is laying off 80 employees as it shifts development direction for its open-world cyberpunk game Last Sentinel. The Irvine studio, a Tencent subsidiary, said the changes follow an internal review. Development on the title will continue.

The studio announced the layoffs after determining that Last Sentinel was not meeting expectations. The game, set in a futuristic Tokyo, first appeared in a 2023 Game Awards trailer and added actor Troy Baker as performance director in 2024.

Lightspeed LA said it remains open and will support affected staff with comprehensive assistance and possible internal transfers. The company described the move as necessary to deliver the experience players expect.

Lightspeed LA operates as the US arm of Lightspeed Games under Tencent. The parent company has closed other studios in recent years while expanding investments elsewhere.
