Oklahoma man receives life sentence for strangling wife

Clifton Wayne Hampton, 51, was sentenced to life in prison with parole possible after at least 38 years for strangling his wife Christina to death. The killing followed an argument where she called him 'pathetic' and sought a divorce. Rogers County District Judge Lara M. Russell imposed the sentence on Thursday after Hampton pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.

Rogers County District Judge Lara M. Russell sentenced Clifton Wayne Hampton to life imprisonment on Thursday for the first-degree murder of his wife, Christina Hampton. In Oklahoma, a life sentence requires serving at least 85% of a 45-year term before parole eligibility, meaning Hampton faces over 38 years behind bars. Hampton pleaded guilty to the charge stemming from the October 2, 2025, incident at their home in Rogers County. Prosecutors detailed how Hampton admitted to choking Christina while she lay in bed after she insulted him and demanded a divorce just days before their 13th anniversary. He claimed his intent was to 'shut her up' and that he later tried to move her body to a hospital, causing her visible injuries including throat marks, nose bleeding, and knee scrapes. Sheriff Scott Walton noted immediate inconsistencies in Hampton's initial story, where he claimed Christina had wandered off during a drive and collapsed roadside. Hampton later confessed to investigators, abandoning his fabricated account. During the hearing, Christina's mother, Shirley Vanderpool, delivered a victim impact statement expressing her anguish. 'It's hard to believe that, you know, 13 years ago, he promised to love and honor and protect her, and then he kills her. Just a few days before their 13th anniversary,' Vanderpool said, according to KOTV.
