Refurbished dome ready to host South African parliament sittings

The National Assembly of South Africa has received a refurbished dome to serve as a temporary venue for its sittings following the 2022 parliament fire. Handed over on February 6, 2026, the upgraded Nieuwmeester Dome will accommodate debates on the State of the Nation Address, while the main SONA event occurs at Cape Town City Hall. Improvements ensure it withstands local weather and meets safety standards.

A fire on January 2, 2022, severely damaged the National Assembly building and parts of the Old Assembly in South Africa's parliamentary precinct in Cape Town. Since then, lawmakers have relied on alternative locations like City Hall or the Cape Town International Convention Centre for sessions. Full reconstruction of the permanent facilities is slated for completion by 2027.

To address ongoing needs, Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson handed over the refurbished Nieuwmeester Dome on February 6, 2026. Originally erected for former President Nelson Mandela's funeral in 2013, the dome is situated between Roeland and Commercial streets, opposite Parliament. The R30 million project, funded equally by Parliament and the Department of Public Works at R15 million each, was completed in 10 weeks.

Key upgrades include reinforcements against Cape Town's strong winds, enhanced soundproofing for clear debates and recordings, compliance with safety and operational standards, and improved air conditioning for year-round use. The venue seats 500 parliamentarians, including 400 National Assembly members and National Council of Provinces delegates, plus 165 gallery seats.

Macpherson emphasized the facility's role in maintaining parliamentary functions: "This facility will now serve Parliament and by extension the people of South Africa." He added that the work ensures sittings are "safe, dignified, fit for purpose and open to the public."

National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza called the handover a "significant milestone in the recovery, resilience and reward efforts of Parliament following the 2022 fire."

The dome will host National Assembly sessions, including the upcoming debate and reply to the State of the Nation Address on February 12, 2026, though the SONA itself will be at City Hall. Looking ahead, Macpherson noted its 10-year lifespan allows for repurposing as a conferencing venue during recesses to generate revenue: "Every rand must work harder." Proposals from event organizations are expected soon to utilize it responsibly without commercializing Parliament.

South Africa's Constitutional Court has ruled that Parliament acted unconstitutionally by blocking an impeachment inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2022. The decision requires the National Assembly to establish an impeachment committee to examine the Phala Phala matter. Opposition parties immediately called for the president's resignation.
