Colombia may need double its energy by 2030

Alberto García of Drummond Energy warned that Colombia's energy demand could double by 2030 if economic growth stays between 4% and 5% of GDP.

At the Foro de Seguridad Energética y Competitividad, García noted the global trend toward higher energy use despite efficiency gains. He highlighted 33 years of regulatory progress in Colombia's energy sector but warned of current risks.

The executive cited possible stress from the El Niño phenomenon over the next 12 to 24 months. He also pointed to lost self-sufficiency in natural gas, with imports covering 20% of needs.

García highlighted Air-e's 2.3 trillion peso debt and insufficient thermal backup after the latest reliability charge auction. He called for agreements among sector actors to secure future supply.
