The Election Commission of India is preparing to call rival factions of the Trinamool Congress to its Delhi headquarters to adjudicate claims over the party name, symbol and assets.
The Election Commission of India is preparing to call both factions of the Trinamool Congress to its Delhi headquarters. It will decide which group controls the party name, election symbol and assets valued at ₹876 crore as on March 31, 2025.
Rebel leaders claim support from 58 of the party’s 80 MLAs. They have removed Mamata Banerjee as chairperson, elected Arup Roy in her place and formed a parallel committee. Both sides have submitted competing lists of office-bearers to the commission.
The process follows Paragraph 15 of the Election Symbols Order, 1968. Each faction must provide documents on organisational structure and legislative support. The commission may recognise one faction, freeze the symbol or recognise both groups as separate parties.
A senior ECI official said both sides will receive full opportunity to present evidence before any decision. The twin-flower symbol is expected to remain frozen until the verdict. A related hearing at the Calcutta High Court is scheduled for July 28.
