Mortality more than doubled in Île-de-France during June heatwave

Mortality in Île-de-France more than doubled compared to normal during the late June heatwave, according to an updated report from Santé publique France.

With nearly 3,000 deaths, the increase reached 122 percent or 1,565 additional deaths above expected levels between June 22 and 28. The health agency noted that 82.4 percent of the deaths involved people over 65.

The updated estimates include paper certificates and are more complete than the early July data. Mortality remained above normal by more than 200 deaths in the following week.

Santé publique France stated that heat effects are not limited to immediate impacts and that the figures could still be underestimated.
