Record temperatures have been measured across Europe during the ongoing heatwave. The World Health Organization reports over 1,300 excess deaths since June 21.

New data from the European Union's Copernicus program shows Western Europe averaged 20.74 degrees Celsius in June, surpassing the previous record from 2025. The month also featured the hottest ocean temperatures on record in the region. Globally, June came within 0.01 degrees Celsius of the all-time high.

Western and central Europe is experiencing its hottest and most humid heatwave on record this week, with temperatures that would have been virtually impossible without climate change. The event, running from 26 to 28 June, is expected to cause thousands of deaths.

The World Health Organization reports that more than 200,000 people in Europe have died from extreme heat since 2022. Most of the deaths could have been prevented, according to the WHO's Europe chief.

A developing super El Niño in the tropical Pacific has a 90 per cent chance of becoming the strongest in 150 years, according to new forecasts. It is expected to peak at 3.6°C above average sea surface temperatures.

Scientists forecast an 80 percent likelihood that an El Niño will form by September, with most models pointing to a moderate event. Some simulations indicate the possibility of a much stronger episode. Global warming is expected to intensify the effects of any such occurrence.
