Philadelphia Phillies closer Jhoan Duran has opted out of representing the Dominican Republic in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The 27-year-old reliever, acquired from the Minnesota Twins last season, cited preparation for his first full year with the Phillies. This decision comes amid concerns over injuries in the tournament, following Edwin Diaz's 2023 mishap.
Jhoan Duran, the Philadelphia Phillies' $8 million closer, will not participate in the 2026 World Baseball Classic for the Dominican Republic, according to a report from La UCA Deportes on X. This marks the second time Duran has skipped the event, as he also sat out the 2023 edition.
Duran joined the Phillies near the trade deadline in 2025 after spending time with the Minnesota Twins. In his 23 appearances with Philadelphia, he posted a 2.18 ERA, struck out 27 batters in 20.2 innings, and secured 16 saves. Across both teams, the 27-year-old recorded 32 saves in the season, while throwing a career-high 70 innings.
The Dominican Republic's bullpen faces challenges without Duran. Baltimore Orioles closer Felix Bautista, a potential addition, is sidelined for much of 2026 following surgery for a torn rotator cuff and labrum in his throwing shoulder.
Duran's choice aligns with Phillies fans' preferences, especially after New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz suffered a knee injury during the 2023 WBC. As Duran enters his first full season in Philadelphia ahead of free agency in 2028, the team prioritizes his health for the regular season and playoffs.
"It would be awesome for Phillies fans to see another top-tier representative in addition to Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber," wrote Matt Davis of That Balls Outta Here. "However, the idea that he wants to get himself ready for the Phillies' season is perhaps far more important for himself and the team, rather than throwing high-stress innings in mid-March."
