Amazon's New World: Aeternum MMO to shut down in 2027

Amazon Games has announced that its MMO New World: Aeternum will go offline on January 31, 2027, following a delisting from digital stores on January 15, 2026. The decision comes after the game received no new content beyond the 2025 Nighthaven seasonal update, amid ongoing challenges for Amazon's gaming division. Players who own the game can continue accessing it until the servers shut down.

New World: Aeternum, Amazon's ambitious fantasy MMO, launched on PC in September 2021 and expanded to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in October 2024. It achieved a strong debut, peaking at over 900,000 concurrent users, but player numbers have since declined sharply, with around 1,100 concurrent players on Steam as of the announcement.

The shutdown was foreshadowed by several developments. In October 2025, Amazon cut jobs in its gaming division, specifically affecting MMO teams. Earlier, the developer confirmed no further content updates after the Nighthaven seasonal event. On January 15, 2026, the game was delisted from all platforms, preventing new purchases, though existing owners can still download and play it.

Amazon extended the Nighthaven season until the end of service, and world bosses along with bonus weeks will continue running. The company will monitor for bugs and performance issues to keep the game stable during its wind-down period. Microtransactions, including the Marks of Fortune currency, remain available until July 19, 2026, after which all in-game purchases will cease. No refunds are offered for unused Marks of Fortune.

In its official statement, Amazon expressed gratitude to the community: "We want to thank the players for your dedication and passion. We are grateful for the time spent crafting the world of Aeternum with you. Together we built something special. While we are saddened to say goodbye, we’re honored that we were able to share so much with the community."

This closure adds to Amazon's rocky history in gaming, including the cancellation of projects like Crucible and a Lord of the Rings MMO. Despite these setbacks, the company continues to publish titles such as the upcoming Tomb Raider games.

Reactions on X to New World: Aeternum's shutdown are predominantly negative, with users expressing disappointment over the game's lost potential despite recent improvements. Critics blame Amazon's mismanagement and question the unusually long one-year notice, fearing it will deter players. Some defend the recent state of the game, while others advocate for physical games to avoid server dependencies. Skepticism surrounds the lack of new content and sustainability claims.
