Morena national leader Ariadna Montiel and Sonora governor Alfonso Durazo rejected claims published by The New York Times on June 27 about alleged party informants to US authorities.
Morena national leader Ariadna Montiel described the publication as part of an ultra-right campaign that began against former president López Obrador. She said it is the same narrative aimed at discrediting the movement.
On June 27 The New York Times reported that at least ten elected Morena officials, including governors and legislators, contacted the US Department of Justice to share information on other politicians’ ties to organized crime. The newspaper did not reveal names.
Durazo sent a letter to NYT editor in chief Arthur Sulzberger denying any official notification of an investigation. He called the article highly speculative and requested a public clarification.
Both leaders reiterated that the party will not cover for anyone but will not allow a narrative without verifiable support to take hold.
