BBC itapunguza nafasi za kazi 2,000 kimataifa

Shirika la utangazaji la Uingereza, BBC, limetangaza kupunguza hadi nafasi za kazi 2,000 kimataifa, na hivyo kuathiri ofisi yake kubwa nje ya Uingereza huko Nairobi. Tangazo hili lilitolewa na mkuu wake wa muda Rhodri Talfan kupitia barua pepe ya ndani Jumatano. Nairobi bureau, yenye wafanyakazi karibu 600, inashughulikia televisheni, redio na majukwaa ya kidijitali barani Afrika.

Rhodri Talfan, mkuu wa muda wa BBC, alisema katika barua pepe ya ndani kuwa idadi ya nafasi za kazi itapungua kwa kati ya 1,800 na 2,000, ambayo ni asilimia 10 ya wafanyakazi wake wa kimataifa wanaofikia 21,500. “Idadi ya jumla ya nafasi za kazi itapungua kwa 1,800 hadi 2,000,” alisema Rhodri. Aliongeza, “ Kwa ufupi, pengo kati ya gharama zetu na mapato yanakua.”

Sababu kuu ni mfumuko wa gharama za utengenezaji, shinikizo kwenye ada ya leseni ya utangazaji na mapato ya kibiashara, pamoja na uchumi wa kimataifa usio na utabiri. BBC inalenga kuokoa pauni 500 milioni (takriban Ksh 85 bilioni) katika miaka miwili ijayo.

Ofisi ya Nairobi, kubwa zaidi nje ya Uingereza, imepata athari moja kwa moja, hasa baada ya kuhamishiwa kwa podikasti ya Focus on Africa na programu ya Newsday kutoka Novemba na Desemba 2025. Wafanyakazi 600 wanaofanya kazi huko wana wasiwasi kama wataathirika.

Talfan Davies, Mkurugenzi Mkuu wa muda, alisema itachukua miezi 3-4 kutekeleza mabadiliko bila kuharibu huduma za msingi. Hatua za kuokoa zinaweka udhibiti mkali wa kuajiri na kusafiri, kupunguza matumizi ya wataalamu wa usimamizi, na gharama za mikutano na tuzo.

Hali hii inaendana na upotevu wa nafasi za kazi katika vyombo vya habari vya Kenya, kama Mediamax, Nation Media Group (zaidi ya 100) na Standard Group (zaidi ya 300).
