Beijing promotes Taiwan exchanges at Straits Forum despite tightened restrictions

The 18th Straits Forum is set to take place on Saturday in Xiamen, with Wang Huning expected to speak.

The Straits Forum, now in its 18th edition since 2009, serves as Beijing’s main platform for cross-strait people-to-people engagement in fields such as culture and economics.

The main forum takes place on Saturday in Xiamen, Fujian province, amid tightened restrictions by Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

For the first time, the DPP has explicitly banned municipal and county government officials from attending, upgrading earlier advisories and expanding an existing ban on more senior officials.

Beijing sees Taiwan as part of China to be reunited by force if necessary.

China's Taiwan Affairs Office announced 10 measures on Sunday to promote cross-strait economic cooperation and livelihoods, following Kuomintang chairwoman Cheng Li-wun's six-day visit to the mainland, where she met Xi Jinping. The plan has been welcomed by Taiwan industries but drawn warnings from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

Wang Huning addressed the Straits Forum, noting enthusiastic Taiwanese participation despite restrictions and urging delegates to stand on the right side of history.

Kuomintang chairwoman Cheng Li-wun met Xi Jinping in Beijing on the fourth day of her six-day mainland visit, marking the first meeting between the two parties' leaders in nine years. In a press conference, she described the talks as the KMT's initial step to defuse cross-strait tensions, calling it a "choice of war or peace." Analysts say the encounter reaffirms the 1992 consensus but hinges on the KMT regaining power in Taiwan.

China and the Philippines resumed high-level dialogue on Saturday in Quanzhou, Fujian province, through the 11th meeting of the South China Sea bilateral consultation mechanism and the 24th round of China-Philippines Foreign Ministry Consultations. Vice-Foreign Minister Sun Weidong and Philippine Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Policy Leo M. Herrera-Lim co-chaired the talks, with Beijing urging Manila to match words with actions.
