CBSE directs schools to defend on-screen marking amid backlash

The Central Board of Secondary Education circulated a social media toolkit to principals this week urging them to back its new on-screen marking system for Class 12 exams.

Regional offices sent a document titled “Material for Principals” containing scripts for principals to read out. One script described the board as “highly proactive, empathetic, and communicative” and told students not to panic over technical issues.

Hundreds of schools, including Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, posted Instagram reels repeating these points. Some principals refused, saying they preferred to highlight student concerns instead.

Separately, the board is considering a penalty on vendor Coempt Edutech after identifying 5,000 blurred scans and 23 mismatched answer sheets. The firm, previously known as Globarena Technologies, faced contract cancellation in Telangana in 2019 over similar evaluation errors.

As of May 26, nearly one in four of 1.8 million Class 12 students had applied for scanned copies, more than double last year’s figure.
