Chimpanzee study traces human crystal fascination to evolutionary roots

A new study shows that chimpanzees share humans' attraction to crystals, suggesting the behavior dates back at least six million years. Researchers found that the animals preferred crystals over ordinary stones and examined them closely.

Archaeologists have found crystals at ancient sites with Homo remains dating back 780,000 years. These stones showed no signs of use as tools or ornaments, raising questions about their appeal.

Scientists at the Rainfer Foundation in Spain tested this interest with enculturated chimpanzees. The animals quickly selected crystals from piles of pebbles and studied their transparency and shape for hours.

Lead author Prof Juan Manuel García-Ruiz said the chimpanzees' response was strong and natural. One chimp named Sandy even sorted crystals from pebbles and carried them away.

The findings point to transparency and geometric form as key factors. García-Ruiz concluded that sensitivity to crystals has deep evolutionary origins shared with humans.

A new analysis of primate teeth suggests that grooves once attributed to ancient tooth-picking may form naturally instead. Researchers also found no signs of a common modern dental issue in wild primates.

Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that early humans produced sophisticated stone tools in central China during a brutal ice age 146,000 years ago. The findings come from the Lingjing site and challenge previous assumptions about when human creativity emerged.

Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that early humans inhabited dense rainforests in West Africa around 150000 years ago. The finding more than doubles the previous estimate for such habitation on the continent. It challenges long-held assumptions about early human adaptability.

New research indicates that humans, rather than a glacier, probably transported the altar stone to Stonehenge from north-east Scotland. The 6-tonne sandstone monolith traveled about 750 kilometres to its current position at the monument's centre.
