Convicted with ankle monitors planned to live opposite school in Täby

Sweden's first controlled housing for convicted individuals with ankle monitors is planned in a hotel in Täby. The location near an elementary school has drawn criticism from the municipality.

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service plans to use a hotel in Hägerneholm for the housing. It will accommodate people sentenced to a maximum of one year and six months in prison who serve their sentence with electronic monitoring.

Municipal board chairman Erik Andersson (M) calls the choice of location incomprehensible. He points to the proximity to school buildings and sports fields where children spend time daily.

The Prison and Probation Service states that security staff will be present around the clock. All residents will be monitored via ankle bracelet and must stay sober and have employment.

Restaurant owner Murat Kaya in the same building expresses concern that customers will disappear. The municipality demands a building permit for the operation.
