Delhi records highest power demand at 8,748 MW

Delhi met its record electricity demand of 8,748 MW on Monday without major grid issues despite a heatwave. Officials credited advance planning and infrastructure upgrades for the success.

The peak demand occurred at 3:17 PM, surpassing the previous record of 8,656 MW set on June 19, 2024. Power Minister Ashish Sood noted that months of preparation, including power banking with other states and green energy agreements, ensured supply stability.

Transmission upgrades and replacement of old equipment strengthened the network. Real-time monitoring by the State Load Despatch Centre supports confidence in handling demand up to 9,000 MW.

Sood stated that Delhi faced its toughest test yet but the grid held firm due to prior planning.

A severe heatwave has deepened water and power crises across several Indian states including Delhi. The Delhi government has sought additional water from Haryana for four weeks.

Mexico's National Center for Energy Control (CENACE) forecasts a historic peak of up to 54,000 megawatts in electricity demand during the hottest months from May to late summer, but with sufficient reserves to prevent blackouts. CENACE director Octavio Mota Palomino called it a 'tight summer, but without deficit.' Officials have taken preventive steps ahead of potential heat waves.

Thunderstorms and rain on Thursday evening caused temperatures in Delhi-NCR to fall sharply by up to 15 degrees Celsius in some areas. Cooling zones set up by the Delhi government continue to offer relief to commuters and residents. The India Meteorological Department forecasts continued thunderstorm activity through May 31.
