KMT chairwoman Cheng Li-wun arrives in Shanghai for mainland visit

Kuomintang chairwoman Cheng Li-wun led a delegation arriving in Shanghai at noon on Tuesday, kicking off a six-day mainland visit to Jiangsu Province, Shanghai and Beijing. This marks the first such trip led by a KMT chair in a decade. Cheng described it as a 'journey of peace' to foster dialogue across the Taiwan Strait.

A delegation from Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) party, led by chairwoman Cheng Li-wun, arrived in Shanghai at noon on Tuesday for a mainland visit running through Sunday.

The group is scheduled to visit Jiangsu Province, Shanghai and Beijing, marking the first time in a decade that a KMT chairperson has led such a delegation to the Chinese mainland.

A spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office stated that strengthening exchanges and dialogue between the KMT and the Communist Party of China will have a significant and positive impact on maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.

Ahead of departure, Cheng called the visit a 'journey of peace' and said both sides of the Taiwan Strait should seek dialogue and communication to resolve their differences. She is expected to meet President Xi Jinping during the trip.

Kuomintang chairwoman Cheng Li-wun met Xi Jinping in Beijing on the fourth day of her six-day mainland visit, marking the first meeting between the two parties' leaders in nine years. In a press conference, she described the talks as the KMT's initial step to defuse cross-strait tensions, calling it a "choice of war or peace." Analysts say the encounter reaffirms the 1992 consensus but hinges on the KMT regaining power in Taiwan.
