Large quake strikes Garpenberg mine, staff evacuated

A magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck Boliden's Garpenberg mine at 875 meters depth on Friday morning. Underground staff were evacuated, but no one was injured and operations above ground remained unaffected.

The quake is the largest in a series of seismic events at the mine since March. According to the Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN), it was clearly felt and heard in the surrounding area.

Klas Nilsson, communications chief at Boliden, stated there is no cause for concern above ground for people or buildings. He also confirmed no injuries occurred.

Björn Lund, senior lecturer in seismology at Uppsala University, described the event as an aftershock from the spring activities. He noted it is unusual for such a large quake to occur so long after the previous ones. The prior largest quake in the series took place on March 15 with a magnitude of 2.3.

Two weeks after a rockfall and tremors halted operations at Boliden's Garpenberg mine—injuring several workers and forcing evacuation—production is now forecast at only one third of the annual plan. The union reports high anxiety among staff, but no layoffs are planned.

The Land and Environment Court on Monday granted Boliden a permit for continued and expanded operations at the Aitik mine outside Gällivare.
