Limpopo ANC replaces mayors in Vhembe and Tzaneen districts

The African National Congress in Limpopo has removed two mayors from their positions in the Vhembe and Tzaneen districts.

The African National Congress in Limpopo has removed two mayors from their positions. Miyelani Chauke replaced Fredah Nkondo as executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality. Chauke was inaugurated during a special council sitting in Thohoyandou.

In Tzaneen, Odas Ngobeni is set to replace Gerson Molapisane. The decision was made at a provincial executive committee meeting earlier this week.

Party spokesperson Ernest Rachoene said the new mayors must speed up service delivery. He stressed the need for water provision and other essential services for residents.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza's late-night reshuffle of his Mayoral Committee has led to the EFF withdrawing from the coalition, creating uncertainty in the city's governance. The move, which expanded ANC positions and reduced the EFF's roles, was rejected by both the EFF and ActionSA. This leaves the ANC-led coalition without a majority in the 224-seat council.

President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that Johannesburg needs a strong mayor, noting that Dada Morero remains in the position with no change. This comment, made at the News24 On the Record Summit, is seen as an indication of national ANC intervention in regional candidate selection. Separately, the ANC organised a People's March in Defence of Sovereignty and Democratic Gains on Human Rights Day.

Nelson Mandela Bay metro is struggling with a leadership vacuum, relying on acting managers beyond legal limits and incurring millions in costs, opposition parties say. The crisis has led to lost funds and service delivery issues, highlighted during a recent parliamentary committee appearance. The DA has lodged a criminal complaint against Mayor Babalwa Lobishe for allegedly misleading Parliament.
