Low TBE coverage among farmers and forest workers

A new national survey shows that 37 percent of farmers and 32 percent of forest workers have not been vaccinated against TBE.

Umeå University and the National Veterinary Institute have surveyed just over 1 000 people in outdoor professions. The study shows that many lack protection even though they spend time in areas with ticks.

Researcher Junwen Guo at Umeå University explains that people who have not experienced the disease themselves often underestimate the risk. Many live in rural areas and lack access to vaccination buses.

The Public Health Agency bases its recommendations on risk areas. Ulrika Marking at the agency says employers can consider offering vaccination to employees exposed to ticks.
