McLaren to trial upside-down rear wing at Austrian Grand Prix

McLaren will test an experimental upside-down rear wing concept during Friday practice sessions at the Austrian Grand Prix.

The McLaren Formula 1 team plans to run the new rear wing as a test item only, following similar designs already used by Ferrari and Red Bull.

Ferrari introduced a rear wing that rotates 180 degrees during winter testing. Red Bull later tested its own version at the Miami Grand Prix.

"As part of this continued momentum, the team will deliver minor detail refinements on the MCL40’s rear corners. In addition, we will test an experimental rear wing throughout Friday’s Free Practice sessions," the team stated in its preview.

McLaren technical director Neil Houldey said the wing forms part of ongoing development work aimed at adding performance and lap time. The design is not expected to appear in qualifying or the race.

Ferrari conducted a filming day at Monza to evaluate upgrades for its SF-26 car ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. The team tested an updated version of its rotating rear wing, known as the 'Macarena', along with other aerodynamic features. These changes come after the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix due to the Iran war.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella believes Ferrari and Red Bull hold an edge for the potentially rainy Canadian Grand Prix after completing Pirelli wet-weather development runs earlier this year.
