F1 teams fit unique rear wings for Monaco GP

Several Formula 1 teams have modified their rear wings with additional winglets for the Monaco Grand Prix after straight mode was removed this weekend.

The change allowed teams to replace the rear wing actuator housing with downforce-generating devices inside the FIA-defined legality box. Mercedes adopted the most radical design, mounting a series of cascading winglets on the mainplane pylon along with additional elements and Gurney flaps. Red Bull fitted two enclosed winglets, while McLaren stacked longer-chord winglets on the mainplane ahead of smaller ones on the upper flap. Audi and Cadillac added cascading elements on the upper rear wing plane, and Racing Bulls extended the central chord with a single tab and Gurney flap. These additions increase downforce at low cornering speeds without creating a meaningful drag penalty on Monaco's short straights.

Ferrari will introduce its innovative rotating rear wing during the first practice session at the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. The device, tested earlier in Bahrain pre-season, flips completely upside down to reduce drag on straights. Lewis Hamilton praised the team's efforts in accelerating its development for the weekend.

Ferrari tested a novel winglet on the front of the halo during practice and the sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix but removed it ahead of qualifying. The team faced questions over its legality from the FIA and a rival protest threat. Officials believe it acted as a windscreen to redirect airflow.

Ferrari conducted a filming day at Monza to evaluate upgrades for its SF-26 car ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. The team tested an updated version of its rotating rear wing, known as the 'Macarena', along with other aerodynamic features. These changes come after the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix due to the Iran war.

The Cadillac Formula 1 team has unveiled its latest upgrade package ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix. The MAC-26 will feature new front brake drums, diffuser trim, winglets and front torsion bars.

The FIA has launched an investigation into Mercedes' movable front wing on its 2026 W17 car following a rival team's request for clarification after the Chinese Grand Prix. The wing allegedly closes in two phases, with the second exceeding the 400-millisecond regulatory limit. Officials aim to resolve the issue before the upcoming Suzuka Grand Prix.

Red Bull has taken a step forward with upgrades to its RB22 car at the Miami Grand Prix. The team reduced excess weight and plans further cuts to meet the minimum limit by the Austrian race.

Formula 1 team principals met to review the Australian and Chinese Grands Prix under the championship's new regulations. They agreed that races have delivered high-standard action and positive fan response, posing no immediate concerns. Qualifying emerged as the priority for potential adjustments due to the 'lift and coast' technique used on fast laps.
