Netflix documentary uses AI to voice late Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist

A new Netflix documentary about the early days of the Red Hot Chili Peppers features an AI-generated voiceover of founding guitarist Hillel Slovak reading from his personal journals. Directed by Ben Feldman, the film premiered at SXSW and began streaming on March 20. The band has distanced itself from the project while expressing support for honoring Slovak.

Netflix has released 'The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel,' a documentary focusing on the late guitarist Hillel Slovak and his role in the band's formation. Director Ben Feldman employed artificial intelligence to recreate Slovak's voice, allowing the musician to narrate entries from his personal journals. The film includes an early notice that the audio was digitally reconstructed, and Feldman secured approval from Slovak's family for the technique. He described it as 'Hillel’s voice reading his own journals,' calling it 'a critical way to make his [words] feel alive.'

This builds on other changes like multiple acting nominations per performer and expanded Best International Feature eligibility.
