Nigeria advances energy reforms with new gas agreements

Recent developments in Nigeria's energy sector include a major regional gas pipeline agreement and increased production figures under the Tinubu administration.

On July 19, 2026, heads of state from ECOWAS member countries signed the Intergovernmental Agreement for the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline at the ECOWAS Summit in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The project, led by NNPC Ltd and Morocco’s ONHYM, aims to span nearly 6,900 kilometres and deliver up to 30 billion cubic metres of gas per year.

In May 2026, NNPC reported crude oil and condensate output of 1.73 million barrels per day and natural gas production of 7.774 billion standard cubic feet per day. The NNPC Gas Master Plan was launched on 31 January 2026, with over 50 percent of the 2026 gas development target achieved so far.

In August 2025, NNPC Limited and partners including Shell, TotalEnergies, and Eni signed 20-year Gas Supply Agreements for 1.29 billion standard cubic feet per day. The West African Gas Pipeline has transported over 613 million MMBtu of natural gas, with a 22 percent supply increase in 2025.
