Registry rejects Daniel Quintero's bid in Life Front consultation

The National Civil Registry rejected Daniel Quintero's presidential bid in the Life Front consultation, backed by the AICO Party. The decision stems from Quintero's prior participation and loss in the Historic Pact consultation last October. The agency referred other inscriptions to the National Electoral Council for review.

The National Civil Registry issued a statement following the registration of the left-wing consultation known as the Life Front, rejecting Daniel Quintero's candidacy. The aspirant sought to participate backed by the AICO Party, but the agency ruled that his inscription violates administrative precedents. Specifically, Quintero already competed and was defeated in the Historic Pact consultation last October, barring a new bid through another political group under the Constitution and law.

Quintero responded to the decision by stating: “The CNE has already informed that it is competent to decide on our candidacy. The registry cannot and should not block democracy, and the right of citizens to choose and be chosen. Expect news in the coming hours”.

In its official statement, the Registry clarified: “Accepting the inscription of a precandidacy under these conditions is contrary to the legal framework”. Additionally, the electoral organization forwarded to the National Electoral Council (CNE) the documentation for the inscriptions of Iván Cepeda, Roy Barreras, and Camilo Romero, so that authority can assess if they meet legal requirements. The final resolution on these candidacies will rest with the CNE, keeping the Life Front consultation process under review as implications are addressed.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) revoked the Historic Pact's registration for the House of Representatives in Valle del Cauca, due to exceeding the vote percentage limit for alliances. This ruling creates uncertainty ahead of the March 8 legislative elections in a key leftist stronghold. The Pact intends to challenge the decision through legal means.

The president of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Guadalupe Taddei Zavala, clarified that the involvement of Talleres Gráficos de México in the contract to produce voting credentials does not grant the government access to the Electoral Registry or citizen data. The contract was awarded to Cosmocolor in partnership with other firms following a competitive evaluation. Taddei stressed the security measures the INE has upheld for 35 years.

Chile's 2025 presidential runoff exposes a deep defeat for the new left, which has lost support from popular sectors under Gabriel Boric's government. Analyses show low-income voters favored right-wing candidates in the first round, as the political system reveals exhaustion and fragmentation since 2010. Experts urge reflection on rebuilding stable majorities.

The registration of a promoter committee for a national constituent assembly with the Registraduría has reignited a debate Colombia thought settled. The Partido Nacional Libertario (PNL) has decided not to join the government of president-elect José Antonio Kast, citing that the chosen political design limits their influence in key programmatic areas. Johannes Kaiser, the party's leader, voiced support for security and economic policies but warned they will raise their voice against misguided advances. The party will adopt a stance of independence and oversight from Congress.
