The Springbok Women defeated the USA Women’s Eagles 34-21 at Ellis Park on 4 July, marking their first victory against the side since 2011.
The Springbok Women led 29-0 at halftime after scoring four tries in the opening period. Ayanda Malinga opened the scoring in the sixth minute, while Logan Welman added two tries before the break.
South Africa dominated with strong defence and set-piece innovation, including a two-person lineout and a maul from a scrum. The USA Women received a yellow card and conceded 10 penalties in the first half.
The visitors scored three converted tries in the second half, but the Springbok Women held on for the 34-21 win. Head coach Swys de Bruin said the first half was the best he had seen from the team. USA coach Jack Hanratty praised his bench players but expressed disappointment in the overall performance.
The teams will meet again on 11 July at Loftus.
