TSC sets teaching hours for school administrators

The Teachers Service Commission has outlined mandatory weekly lesson requirements for principals, deputy principals and senior masters in senior schools. The rules require administrators to continue classroom teaching while performing management duties. Requirements vary by school size.

Under the new guidelines, administrators in schools with one to six classes must teach between 15 and 27 lessons per week. Principals handle the fewest lessons at 15, while senior masters teach 27. In larger schools with 13 or more classes, principals teach 10 lessons, deputy principals teach 15, and senior masters teach 24.

The standard teaching load for regular teachers remains 27 lessons each week, with each lesson lasting 40 minutes. The TSC uses a staffing formula that accounts for administrators' reduced loads when calculating overall teacher needs.

The commission issued the guidelines to clarify its position after dismissing a fake poster that suggested headteachers could be exempted from teaching. The rules confirm that administrators will keep active classroom roles under the Competency-Based Curriculum.
