The New York Yankees have initiated trade conversations with the Miami Marlins for right-hander Edward Cabrera, according to multiple reports from The Athletic and other outlets. Cabrera, who turns 28 in April, posted a 3.53 ERA with 150 strikeouts over a career-high 137 2/3 innings in 26 starts during the 2025 season. He is under team control through 2028 and projected to earn $3.7 million in arbitration for 2026. However, Cabrera dealt with injuries last year, including a right middle finger blister early in the season and a sprained right elbow in September, as well as a shoulder impingement in 2024.
The Yankees' interest stems from a depleted rotation to open 2026. Gerrit Cole underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in March 2025 and is tracking toward a return in late May or June. Carlos Rodón had left elbow surgery in October and could return by April or May, while Clarke Schmidt is also recovering from elbow surgery. General manager Brian Cashman expressed a desire to add another starter before the season starts, noting the team's quiet offseason so far.
Interest in Cabrera is not exclusive to New York. The Mets, Cubs, Astros, Orioles, and San Francisco Giants have also shown varying levels of interest. The Yankees have a history of dealing with the Marlins, acquiring infielders Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Jon Berti in recent years.
In addition to Cabrera, the Yankees continue discussions with the Brewers about Freddy Peralta, a 29-year-old All-Star entering his walk year at $8 million. Peralta excelled in 2025 with a 17-6 record, 2.70 ERA, and 204 strikeouts. The Yankees won 94 games in 2025 but faltered in the ALDS, losing 0-4 to the Toronto Blue Jays while allowing 34 runs.
