Senate approves Benedito Gonçalves nomination to CNJ

The federal Senate approved on Wednesday the nomination of STJ minister Benedito Gonçalves as national justice inspector at the CNJ. The vote passed with 53 in favor and 16 against.

The tally exceeded the required absolute majority of 41 votes. The nomination had been postponed in May by Senate President Davi Alcolumbre due to insufficient quorum. Benedito Gonçalves was nominated by STJ President Herman Benjamin after election by the court on April 14. During a hearing at the Constitution and Justice Commission he defended that magistrates should renew their commitments to society every day. The CNJ has 15 members serving two-year terms with one seat reserved for the STJ to act as inspector receiving complaints against judges. The minister has been in the judiciary since 1988 and at the STJ since 2008 having served on the TSE from 2019 to 2023.

Brazil's Senate rejected Attorney-General Jorge Messias's nomination to the Supreme Federal Court (STF) on Wednesday (April 29, 2026), with 42 votes against and 34 in favor. The vote marks the first rejection of a presidential nominee to the Court in 132 years, since 1894. Messias had been approved by the CCJ committee 16-11 after an eight-hour hearing.

Jorge Messias, Brazil's Attorney-General nominated by Lula to the STF, passed the Senate's Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) 16-11 after an eight-hour hearing. The vote, the tightest since redemocratization, faced resistance, particularly from Senate President Davi Alcolumbre. He now needs 41 votes in the full Senate to fill Luís Roberto Barroso's vacancy.

Supreme Court justices including André Mendonça, Gilmar Mendes, and Cristiano Zanin ramped up efforts to secure approval for Jorge Messias' nomination to the bench, with a hearing scheduled for Wednesday (29) in the Senate's CCJ committee. The Lula administration negotiated positions and amendments, as Messias gained PSB backing after lunching with Rodrigo Pacheco and Geraldo Alckmin. Senator Marcos Pontes suggested abstentions in a video to sway the secret ballot.

Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) formed a majority on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, to condemn Rio de Janeiro's former governor Cláudio Castro (PL) for political and economic power abuse in the 2022 elections, barring him from office until 2030. The 4-1 vote jeopardizes his Senate pre-candidacy.

Minister Kassio Nunes Marques was drawn on Monday (11) as rapporteur for the criminal review request filed by Jair Bolsonaro's defense at the Supreme Federal Court. The process seeks to annul the former president's conviction for attempted coup.

In response to a rejected CPI report proposing his indictment, STF Justice Gilmar Mendes on April 15 requested Attorney General Paulo Gonet investigate Senator Alessandro Vieira for abuse of authority, citing deviation from the commission's organized crime focus.

Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) resigned from Rio de Janeiro's government on March 23, one day before the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) resumes a trial that could deem him ineligible for abuse of power. He said he leaves 'with his head held high' to run for Senate and highlighted his administration's achievements. Tribunal de Justiça president Ricardo Couto takes over interim, paving way for indirect election by Alerj.
