Colombian authorities arrested a 36-year-old man from Texas on Sunday in Bogota for allegedly sexually abusing a child. The incident occurred in broad daylight on a balcony in an upscale neighborhood.
Passersby witnessed the suspect abusing a 7-year-old boy and shouted at him to stop. A video of the event spread widely on social media, showing the man holding the child next to a balcony railing.
The suspect arrived in Bogota on a June 6 flight. Authorities entered his apartment and found three children, who were taken to a medical center for evaluation. The children are now in the care of Colombia's state child protection agency.
Bogota Mayor Carlos Galan confirmed the arrest and stated there is no room for mistreatment or abuse of boys and girls. Dozens of people gathered outside the building to demand the suspect's arrest.
President Gustavo Petro called for visas to prevent pedophiles from entering the country. This case follows other high-profile incidents involving foreigners and child exploitation in Colombia.
