Fines for handheld phone use while driving rise in Jönköping County

The number of fines for holding a mobile phone while driving has continued to rise in Jönköping County. The law banning this practice has been in force for eight years.

In Jönköping County the number of fines for handheld mobile phone use while driving rose by around 50 percent over the past three years. Figures from Polismyndigheten Polisregion Öst show 413 cases in 2023, 488 in 2024 and 625 in 2025.

Traffic police officer Jonas Karlsson has issued fines on multiple occasions. He believes the law is good and that its effects may become visible over time.

An SVT survey found more drivers using phones than the number fined last year. Karlsson notes that the risks of phone use outweigh any benefit from a call.
